Year 1
My first time in Outdoor Leadership, was definitely one to remember. I was mostly focused on the hard skills like how to set up a tent, use a canister backpacking stove, and pack my gear appropriately. I had to rely on other more experienced classmates for help at times, which they were happy to give. There was also the fitness. I quickly discovered what my body can and cannot handle, and how to push myself just far enough. Thankfully I am an active person and did not have many problems physically. However, it is very important to know your body, so that you can tell the difference between a headache, and dehydration. The idea of "gradual release of responsibility" was big for me. As I gained more confidence and knowledge, came more responsibility. I began to help others and the group a lot more. For example, after getting help tarping a few times, I began to initiate it myself, and helped others as well. I also believe that as the year went by, our teacher Mr.Harwood began to have more trust in us, and gradually watched us grow more independent as we made our own decisions.
Over the course of the year, we learn all about outdoor recreation activities like hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking, skiing, and climbing. I find it very rewarding to watch not only myself, but all of my classmates find their strength in one of these activities and see their passion grow. It is amazing to have the opportunity in school to find such a passion and to be able to gain so much knowledge about it through mostly hands-on work.
My contributions:
Throughout my years being a part of Outdoor Leadership, I have always been keen on helping out. Weather it's something Mr.Harwood needs, a student, or the class in general I am always happy to lend a hand. Understanding what it takes to put on such a program is crucial, and each student must be ready to put in the time to make it all that it is. In my first year, I organized the "Krispy Kreme" donut fundraiser, and spent two weekends standing outside of save on foods in the pouring rain to make sure we could make the most of this fundraiser. I also contributed to others such as the Banff mountain film festival, bake sales, nesters card, and raffles. This year, I am currently planning a car wash, and contributing to another round of krispy kreme sales. I have also made it a priority to help out the exchange students this year, as I recognize that they do not have a large group of friends/family to sell tickets, raffles, and gift cards to. I have also contributed to the community by building trails, and supporting our local senior citizen home as much possible. I find it very rewarding to build a trail that many strangers and adventurers will walk on in the future.
